No direct comment but I’m looking forward to exploring some of these writers in my summer reading!

Yes, I hope you do! You can find a lot of Gabriela Wiener’s work in translation. Undiscovered was nominated for the Booker Prize a couple of years ago. Claudia Salazar’s Blood of the Dawn was also translated.

I'm sorry, "fuck ceviche" ?!!?! (great post otherwise. I had to read The War at the End of the World in a college class and I still think about it)

Hahahahaha it's a bit of an inside joke, but let's just say that while I love ceviche, I also hate how it overwhelms the collective imagination

And thank you for reading! I've heard so many Vargas Llosa haters who will begrudgingly admit that The War at the End of the World absolutely slaps

Thanks for reading! Blood Meridian has been on my bookshelf forever but I haven’t read it yet. Several

friends consider it THE novel of their literary upbringing

not me finding out via this essay that "pituco" was not a Uruguayan-only colloquialism!

Haha, no way! I would have guessed Uruguay used "concheto" because of its proximity to Argentina. Or is it a why-not-both situation? I loooooove learning the different "pituco" synonyms in Latin America: sifrino, fresa, etc.
