Why Even Make This: Finding Spiritual & Practical Meaning in the Creative Process

This month’s mini-salon with Sarah Kokernot of Your Wild and Radiant Mind came at the most timeliest of times. I’m two weeks away from another birthday and, while 42 has been absolutely wonderful, I’m still feeling low about my job loss as a direct result of authoritarian politics. The lack of “yeses” to my pitches and submissions is wearing on me. Another year with no agent, no book contract, no bestseller. IT’S FINE, I’M FINE. Because even when I’m frustrated, I rarely feel like this effort is pointless on an emotional, professional and even political level.

Sarah and I talked about how we’re approaching writing and any creative practice during this Big Apocalypse Energy Epoch. (Spoiler alert: There’s not better time to do it!) We also discuss the small and big meaning we find in our work, how we assign practical goals to each one and the significance that conveys, and we chat with a few attendees about where they find meaning or how they can inspire others to find meaning.

Check out the recording of the session below, as well as some additional resources and links to help you find the meaning in your work!

Our next mini-salon is “Feeding the Creative Well: Resetting and Reenergizing Your Writing” on Thursday, July 10 at 12pm CT/1pm ET. Paid subscribers can submit questions ahead of time and will have access to the recording. If you are a free subscriber, the mini-salon is offered as a pay-what-you-can event with a $15 suggested fee (but we welcome all amounts). You can sign up here.

See you next month!
