My Pitch to The Cut: All My Divorced Friends Are Sharing Custody of Their Pets
Using my own life to look at a larger trend
In late March, I made my debut in one of my favorite outlets, The Cut. I had no idea when I sent the editor my pitch about shared pet custody that the website was working on a package of articles about the state of divorce in these times, but that goes to show how much timing and luck can factor into whether a pitch gets accepted or not. I had a blast reporting this piece—how could I not when it involves pet-obsessed folks, low-key scandalous stories from divorce lawyers, and so many furry friends. It also brought me a lot of healing, in a way. To talk about Charlie and how much the loss affected me was not met with ridicule, but with a lot of compassion.
I am sharing my pitch under the same conditions I always do:
Don’t ever tell me if you find a typo, EVER. It clearly wasn’t bad enough for the jury/committee/reader/editor, etc. to reject me and it will only serve to haunt me until my dying days.
Do not plagiarize my silly little sentences. It’s not cool and I’ll know you’ll have done it. Especially if you copy+paste it with the typos I do NOT want brought to my attention.
